All About Second Chance/STRIVE (California Aid for Felons)

Since the 1980’s, STRIVE or Support Training Results in Valuable Employees continues to provide pre-employment and job readiness training to sectors of the society who are needing such schooling – like ex convicts.

Many believe that the only way for an ex-felon to rehabilitate and go back into society is by empowering them to stand on their own. What better way can we empower individuals than by helping them to gain employment? The reintegration of an ex-felon into society is made faster by employment opportunities that help the ex-felon gain control of his finances; however, finding a job alone may just be the biggest challenge for newly released ex-felons.

Nonprofit organizations such as Second Chance/STRIVE (California Aid for Felons) will certainly be a great help. Not only do these kinds of nonprofit organizations provide job fairs, but they also provide all sorts of assistance and training that any freshly released ex-felon needs in order to land a job.

Second Chance is STRIVE’s biggest and most successful affiliate in the world. Second Chance in California is considered to be the official training center for all STRIVE’s affiliates in the West Coast. Since the start of the training program, STRIVE has graduated 33,000 needy individuals all coming from the marginalized sectors of society. Among the people that Second Chance serves are individuals with felony convictions, out of school youths, unemployed and underemployed individuals, women and children, the homeless and other members of the marginalized sectors of society.

Prisoner Reentry Employment Program or PREP

One program that Second Chance/STRIVE has successfully launched that has yielded great and amazing results throughout the years is Prisoner Reentry Employment Program or PREP. The Prisoner Reentry Employment Program or PREP offers job readiness training and house and life skills programs which help reintegrate ex-felons into the community. After serving their time, newly released prisoners are enrolled in a three-week rigorous training program that will help them go back into society. The program helps newly released ex-felons to develop good attitudes and skills that will help them land employment opportunities, as well as changing bad attitudes that could prevent them from getting employment.

Taking a holistic approach to the problem, PREP not only helps the ex-felons, but also their families, aiming to reduce homelessness and crime in the cities they live in.

Second Chance also welcomes individuals who do not intend to undergo the 3 week long pre-employment training. With the help of in-house job developers, participants can get amazing and comprehensive assistance to help them look for employment on their own.

Second Chance also holds regular job fairs for their graduates to facilitate the training’s aim to give the freshly released ex-felons employment as soon as possible. With over 95% employment rate, STRIVE’s Second Chance proves to be one of the best post-release program out there.

Other programs that Second Chance/Strive has successfully launched are Juveniles’ Options for Lifelong Transitions or JOLT, Financial Freedom and Housing Program.

JOLT is intended to reform out of school youths and help them build a better future for themselves. The program provides scholarships for those who want to go back to school and trainings for those who want to get employment. Financial Freedom is a program launched to train their graduates and anyone interested on how to handle money. Housing program is a program for providing homes that are safe, and violence and drug free. Housing programs are given to people who do not have a place to stay until they have finally found employments which will allow them to get or rent their own homes.
